C-Cure PermaBond Ultra Mastic 1002

Type I adhesive- Mastic

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

PERMABOND® ULTRA 1002 is a superior strength adhesive composed of the highest quality organic resins and latexes. It has been formulated to perform equally well for both wall and floor tile installations.

BASIC USE

PERMABOND ULTRA 1002 is a Type I adhesive designed specifically for the installation of vitreous and non-vitreous ceramic wall and floor tile on vertical or horizontal surfaces. It is easy to apply, non-flammable and safer to use than adhesives containing flammable solvents.

AREAS OF USE

Suitable backings, when properly prepared, include:

• Plumb and true masonry

• Gypsum wallboard

• Gypsum plaster

• Exterior grade plywood (EGP) (dry interior use only)

• Cementitious backer units

• Smooth concrete and plaster

LIMITATIONS

PERMABOND ULTRA 1002 should not be used over stripwood surfaces, wallpaper, Masonite®, metal, particle board, luan plywood or plaster that contains moisture. Not for exterior use.

Do not use to install natural stone, tile with ridges, button or lug backs, Saltillo pavers or glass tile.

Do not use to install fixtures. It is not recommended for service in areas exposed to temperatures exceeding 140°F (60°C).

Use in a temperature range of 40°F to 100°F (4°C to 38°C).

Cure time can be greatly extended when setting dense tiles, tile larger than 6″ x 6″ (15 x 15 cm), or bonding tile to dense surfaces, in high humidity or when temperature is below 60°F (15°C).

APPLICABLE STANDARDS

Conforms to requirements for organic adhesives as found in ANSI A136.1

Type I and ANSI A108.4.

Color – Off-white.

Texture – Heavy bodied creamy paste.

PACKAGING

Quart (.95 L) – Gallon (3.8 L) – 31⁄2 Gallon (13.25 L) Pails.

INSTALLATION

PREPARATORY WORK

All surfaces must be dry, structurally sound and not subject to temperatures below 40°F (4°C) or above 100°F (38°C) during installation and cure.

Surfaces must be dry and free of all grease, oil, dirt, dust, loose paint, curing compounds, sealers, coatings, efflorescence, old adhesive residues, gypsum-based underlayments and any other contaminant which may prevent a good bond.

Detailed installation procedures may be found in the TCA Handbook and ANSI A108.4.

GYPSUM BOARD

The paperbound edges of the gypsum backing board shall be spaced a minimum of 1/4″ (6 mm) and shall be structurally sound and secured. In tub areas, gypsum board should be spaced 1/4″ (6 mm) above bathtub receptor lip. Caulk all edges and openings around pipes, fixtures and tubs with a waterproof, non-hardening caulking compound or adhesive complying with ANSI A136.1 Type I (PERMABOND ULTRA 1002).

EXTERIOR GRADE PLYWOOD SUBSTRATES

All wooden surfaces, when placed over conventional floor joist or other systems, should be of a design and thickness so as to maintain a substrate deflection not to exceed 1/360 of the span, including live and dead load.

Further, the surface to receive the adhesive should be exterior grade plywood only, secured with screw-type nails and glued where possible. A gap of 3/16″ (5 mm) shall be left between sheets of plywood to allow for expansion. In addition, all wooden surfaces must be for interior floor use only

MASONRY SURFACES

Concrete or plaster must be fully cured and not subject to hydrostatic pressure or water seepage. If surfaces are uneven, they should be plumbed with a masonry leveling compound and allowed to cure a minimum of 48 hours before any adhesive is applied. Other recommended surfaces should be clean, dry and structurally sound.

APPLICATION

For ease of application and best results, it is suggested that the adhesive be brought to a temperature range of 40°F to 80°F (4°C to 27°C). CURELASTIC 949

The type of tile to be installed and surface conditions will determine the notch size of the trowel to be used. Apply PERMABOND ULTRA 1002 with the flat side of the trowel to key adhesive into the substrate for uniform coverage. In areas that will be subjected to moisture, it is important that a skim coat of PERMABOND ULTRA 1002 adhesive be applied first and allowed to dry. Additional adhesive should be applied with the notch side of the trowel on areas only as large as can be covered with tile before the adhesive skins over. Remove any adhesive that skins over and reapply fresh adhesive.

Press tiles into adhesive with a twisting motion to ensure an average contact to back of tiles of 95%. Embedding of tiles with a beating block will ensure maximum contact and proper alignment.

Check occasionally to make sure adhesive has not skinned over by removing a tile to check for transfer of adhesive to tile.

CLEANING

Fresh adhesive can be removed from tile
surfaces with a damp sponge.

Tools may be
cleaned in warm soapy water. Dry adhesive
may be removed by scraping or with lacquer
thinner.

CURING AND GROUTING

Under normal conditions, 75°F (24°C), tiles
may be grouted within 24 hours. During
damp cure of cement grouts, caution should
be used to prevent excessive saturation with
water of the adhesive during initial cure.

STORAGE

Keep from freezing.

  1. Hello! I’ve been reading your blog for some time now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from Humble Tx! Just wanted to tell you keep up the excellent job!

  2. Great post full of useful tips! My site is fairly new and I am also having a hard time getting my readers to leave comments. Analytics shows they are coming to the site but I have a feeling “nobody wants to be first”.
