How to Install an Ebbe Square Shower Drain

Ebbe E4400 square shower drains are designed to fit many common 2-inch PVC and ABS shower drain assemblies while providing a clean, modern appearance that simplifies tile installation and maintenance. This step-by-step guide explains how to install an Ebbe square shower drain, adjust the drain body height, prepare the mortar bed, and achieve a professional fit before tile installation.

Converting a traditional round shower drain to an Ebbe square shower drain

Compatible with Common Shower Drain Assemblies

Ebbe E4400 square shower drains fit many standard 2-inch PVC and ABS three-piece shower drain assemblies. In most installations, the original round riser is removed and replaced with the Ebbe drain body.

The fit between the E4400 and the drain's clamping flange can vary depending on the manufacturer. Some drains may fit tighter than others. If additional thread engagement is needed, Teflon tape can be applied to create a snug fit.

It is important to understand that the threaded connection is primarily used for height adjustment during installation. Once the mortar bed is completed, the surrounding mortar supports the drain body and carries the load of normal foot traffic.

Drain Adapters

Some drain assemblies require adapters to work with the E4400 drain body. These adapters are commonly used with regional drain designs or commercial drain applications that differ from standard residential shower drains.

Step 1: Install the Ebbe E4400 Drain Body

Remove the existing round drain riser and replace it with the Ebbe E4400 square drain body. Adjust the drain body to approximately the desired mortar bed height.

For traditional floating mortar beds, industry standards generally require a minimum mortar thickness at the drain. Always follow current tile industry recommendations and local building codes when constructing the shower base.

Step 2: Install the Sloped Mortar Bed

Place, compact, and screed the mortar bed so it slopes consistently toward the drain location. While the mortar remains workable, maintain a clear area around the drain body to allow future height adjustments.

This clearance makes it easier to raise or lower the drain body before the mortar fully cures.

Step 3: Adjust the Drain Height

After the slope has been established, rotate the drain body to raise it to the finished tile height.

Proper adjustment allows the drain grate to finish flush with the surrounding tile surface and helps create a professional appearance.

Step 4: Compact Mortar Around the Drain

Once the drain height has been set, compact mortar beneath and around the drain body to provide full support.

Proper support helps prevent movement and contributes to the long-term durability of the installation.

Step 5: Verify Finished Tile Height

Before allowing the mortar bed to cure, verify the final drain height relative to the tile and thin-set thickness.

It is generally easier to compensate for a drain that is slightly high than one that is set too low.

Step 6: Install Tile and Grout

After the mortar bed has cured, install the tile and grout the shower floor as normal while leaving the protective plug in place.

Maintaining the plug during installation helps preserve the square opening and ensures a proper fit for the drain grate.

Step 7: Leave the Plug Installed Until Grout Has Cured

Do not remove the drain plug until the grout has fully cured.

The plug maintains the shape and dimensions of the drain opening during the curing process. Premature removal may cause grout damage or interfere with the fit of the finished drain grate.

Once the grout has cured, remove the plug and install the drain grate.
