WaterArmor for Shower Waterproofing

WaterArmor is well suited for shower waterproofing beneath tile when installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and applicable tile installation standards. WaterArmor Crack Isolation

Cracks or substrate changes up to 1/8 inch can be treated with WaterArmor and fiberglass mesh tape according to the manufacturer's installation instructions.

WaterArmor Application

Ambient and substrate conditions must meet the manufacturer's temperature requirements. WaterArmor should not be applied when the surface temperature will fall below the required minimum during the specified curing period.

WaterArmor can be applied using a brush, roller or trowel. The material is supplied ready to use and should not be diluted with water or modified with unauthorized additives.

For trowel application, the manufacturer specifies a 3/16 inch V-notch trowel. Spread the material using the notched side and then flatten the material with the smooth side of the trowel to achieve the required film thickness.

Pre-Treat Corners, Edges and Transitions

Before applying the membrane over the main surface, pre-treat edges, corners, coves and floor-to-wall transitions. Apply a heavy coat of WaterArmor over a minimum area of approximately 4 inches on each side of the transition using a brush, roller or appropriate trowel.

For non-continuous corners, coves and in-plane substrate changes, embed 4-inch-wide fiberglass mesh tape into the fresh WaterArmor. Make sure the reinforcement is fully embedded and bonded without leaving voids or air pockets.

Cracks or substrate changes up to 1/8 inch should be filled and reinforced according to the manufacturer's instructions. When treating cracks in concrete floors, center the fiberglass mesh tape over the crack before embedding it into the wet membrane.

Applying the Main Waterproofing Membrane

After the required pre-treatment has been completed, apply a continuous WaterArmor membrane over the remaining surface. The target application is approximately 15 to 25 mils wet film thickness, with a minimum final dry film thickness of 20 mils.

Use a wet film thickness gauge when appropriate to help verify that enough material has been applied. Actual coverage will vary depending on the texture, porosity and roughness of the substrate.

Apply the membrane evenly and avoid pinholes, voids, thin spots or other discontinuities. Inspect the cured membrane before covering it with tile or stone and repair any deficiencies as necessary.

WaterArmor Drying and Recoat Time

WaterArmor is typically dry to the touch in approximately 1 hour at room temperature under standard conditions. Allow approximately 2 hours at 70°F and 50% relative humidity before applying a second coat or installing tile, according to the manufacturer's current data sheet.

Drying times can vary depending on temperature, humidity, substrate porosity, air movement and application thickness. Higher humidity and cooler conditions can extend the drying time.

The membrane changes from a darker gray color toward a lighter gray appearance as it dries. Do not install tile until the membrane has properly cured according to the manufacturer's requirements.

Installing Tile Over WaterArmor

Once WaterArmor has cured for the required period, tile or stone can be installed using an appropriate latex-polymer modified thin-set mortar meeting ANSI A118.4, as specified by the manufacturer.

Always follow the mortar manufacturer's instructions and applicable TCNA installation requirements. The waterproofing membrane should remain intact during tile installation. Avoid puncturing, cutting or damaging the cured membrane.

Flood Testing WaterArmor

Storage and Shelf Life

Store WaterArmor in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location between approximately 50°F and 100°F. Protect the product from freezing, excessive heat and direct sunlight.

When stored in the original unopened packaging under the recommended conditions, WaterArmor has an approximately 2-year shelf life from the date of manufacture.

How to Reseal a Partially Used WaterArmor Pail

If a container is only partially used, place a sheet of plastic over the top of the remaining material before reinstalling the lid. Secure the lid tightly over the plastic. The plastic helps prevent the remaining material from bonding the lid to the container.

When reopening the container, remove the lid carefully. Remove and discard any cured material and plastic from the top of the container. Uncured material may be used if it remains suitable and meets the manufacturer's requirements.

Safety and Handling

WaterArmor may cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation and may be harmful if swallowed. Use the product with adequate ventilation and wear appropriate protective equipment to minimize contact with the eyes and skin.
