SunTouch Mats Specifications and Installation Procedure

SunTouch radiant floor heating mats provide efficient electric floor warming for tile, stone, and masonry flooring installations in residential and light commercial applications.

This installation guide covers SunTouch mat specifications, electrical requirements, floor preparation, thermostat installation, resistance testing, and proper installation procedures for heated floor systems.

SunTouch electric radiant floor heating mats for tile and stone flooring

Overview

SunTouch heating mats are available in multiple sizes and configurations and may be combined to warm bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, showers, basements, and other interior living spaces.

  • Fully grounded heating elements and power leads
  • Twin-wire technology engineered for ultra-low EMF levels
  • GFCI protected control compatibility
  • Available in 120V and 240V systems
  • Compatible with tile, stone, and masonry flooring installations
  • Designed for residential and light commercial applications

SunTouch floor warming systems are designed for interior floor heating applications only and must be installed according to manufacturer guidelines and local electrical codes.

The SunTouch Heating Mat

The heating wire is woven into a durable orange mesh mat available in 1 ft., 2 ft., and 3 ft. widths for both 120V and 240V systems.

Mat sizes range from 10 sq. ft. to 160 sq. ft. depending on voltage and configuration.

Multiple mats may be connected in parallel for larger heated floor installations. All mats connected together must operate on the same voltage.

Example Layout Options:

  • Two 1 ft. x 40 ft. mats
  • One 2 ft. x 20 ft. mat combined with one 1 ft. x 40 ft. mat

Important: Never combine 120V and 240V heating mats within the same heating circuit.

Heating Wire Construction

SunTouch heating wire uses reinforced Aramid fibers with ETFE insulation and braided twin-wire shielding engineered to reduce electromagnetic field exposure to ultra-low levels.

SunTouch systems have been tested according to ASTM C627 standards and are rated for moderate commercial and residential floor warming applications.

Important: SunTouch heating mats should never be installed directly below carpet, vinyl, or wood flooring unless fully encapsulated within approved mortar or self-leveling materials.

Inspect the Mat and Sensor

Resistance readings must be taken throughout the installation process using a quality digital ohmmeter.

Required Testing Stages

  • Before installation
  • After fastening the mat to the floor
  • After flooring installation is complete

The LoudMouth installation monitor continuously monitors the heating wire and alerts installers immediately if wire damage occurs during installation.

LoudMouth Installation Monitor

The LoudMouth monitor continuously checks the heating wire throughout installation.

If the wire becomes damaged, cut, or compromised during installation, an audible alarm sounds immediately.

Using the LoudMouth helps prevent damaged heating wire from being buried beneath mortar and finished flooring materials.

Mat and Sensor Resistance Log

Record all resistance readings during installation to maintain warranty coverage.

Measurement Stage Required Readings

After Mat is Fastened Black to White, Black to Green, White to Green, Sensor Wire
After Flooring Installation Black to White, Black to Green, White to Green, Sensor Wire

Retain all resistance logs for warranty purposes.

Checking for Breaks and Short Circuits

Checking for breaks:

  • Measure resistance between black and white leads
  • Readings should match the nameplate specifications
  • Infinite resistance indicates an open line or wire break

Checking for short circuits:

  • Measure resistance between black and green leads
  • Readings should indicate infinite resistance
  • Any measurable resistance may indicate wire damage

Phase 1: Electrical Rough-In

Step 1.1: Install GFCI Protection

All SunTouch systems must be protected by a GFCI device through either the thermostat or a dedicated breaker.

Typical amperage requirements:

  • 120V systems: approximately 0.1 amps per sq. ft.
  • 240V systems: approximately 0.05 amps per sq. ft.

Step 1.2: Install a SunStat relay if the system exceeds thermostat amperage limits.

Step 1.3: Install thermostat electrical boxes on interior walls approximately 60 inches above the floor.

Step 1.4: Drill conduit and sensor routing openings below the thermostat location.

Step 1.5: Install conduit and route the floor sensor into the heated floor area.

Step 1.6: Complete electrical rough-in wiring according to NEC and local code requirements.

120 Volt Mat Amperage Requirements

Mat Size Coverage Amp Draw
1 ft. x 10 ft. 10 sq. ft. 1.0
1 ft. x 20 ft. 20 sq. ft. 2.0
2 ft. x 20 ft. 40 sq. ft. 4.0
2 ft. x 40 ft. 80 sq. ft. 8.0
3 ft. x 15 ft. 45 sq. ft. 4.5

240 Volt Mat Amperage Requirements

Mat Size Coverage Amp Draw
2 ft. x 10 ft. 20 sq. ft. 1.0
2 ft. x 40 ft. 80 sq. ft. 4.0
2 ft. x 80 ft. 160 sq. ft. 8.0
3 ft. x 20 ft. 60 sq. ft. 3.0
3 ft. x 40 ft. 120 sq. ft. 6.0

## SECTION 2 - MAT INSTALLATION, FLOORING & FINAL WIRING

Phase 2: SunTouch Mat Installation Procedures

Approved installation methods include:

  • Thin-set mortar over framed floor systems
  • Thin-set mortar over concrete slab
  • Thick-set mortar over metal lath
  • Self-leveling mortar systems

Step 2.2: Floor Preparation

Subfloors must be clean, dry, structurally sound, and free of debris before installation begins.

Step 2.3: Review the Layout Plan

Carefully study the mat layout before installation. Never cut or shorten the heating wire.

Step 2.4: Mortar Applications

SunTouch heating mats may be installed using thin-set mortar, thick-set mortar, or self-leveling mortar systems.

For laminate or engineered wood floor applications, self-leveling mortar installations are typically recommended.

Securing SunTouch heating mat with double-sided tape

Step 2.5: Installing the Mat

Roll out the heating mat according to the installation plan and secure it using double-sided tape, hot glue, or approved fastening methods.

  • Keep mats approximately 4 to 6 inches away from walls and fixtures
  • Never allow heating wires closer than 2 inches together
  • Never overlap heating mats
  • Only cut the orange mesh backing, never the heating wire

Step 2.6: Shower Installations

  • Never install heating mats inside shower walls
  • Controls must remain at least 4 feet away from shower openings
  • Factory connections must remain fully embedded in mortar
  • Install only beneath approved masonry surfaces

SunTouch power lead and factory connection installation

Step 2.7: Power Lead and Factory Connection Installation

Power leads and factory splice connections may require shallow recesses in the subfloor to maintain a flat finished tile surface.

Use hot glue or approved fastening methods to secure connections while avoiding damage to the heating wire.

Step 2.8: Thermostat Sensor Installation

The floor sensor should be positioned between heating wires approximately 6 to 12 inches into the heated floor area.

Avoid placing sensors near heating ducts or other external heat sources.

Step 2.9: Mat Turns and Fill-In Techniques

The orange mesh backing may be cut and rotated around corners and obstacles while keeping the heating wire intact.

Phase 3: Final Floor Installation

Continue resistance testing throughout the floor installation process.

  • Use latex-modified or epoxy-modified mortars
  • Recommended trowel size: 3/8 inch x 1/4 inch
  • Never strike the heating wire with a trowel
  • Prevent nails or screws from penetrating heated floor areas
