Installation Guide

Recommended Substrates:

• Properly cured mortar beds meeting ANSI A108.1B and cured for a minimum of 7 days.
• Cementitious backer units meeting ANSI A118.9.
• Concrete slabs cured for a minimum of 28 days.
• Gypsum board meeting ASTM C1396 or ASTM C1396M-04 in dry areas only.
• For wet-area installations over cementitious backer units, use the appropriate waterproofing membrane in accordance with applicable installation standards.

Setting Materials & Methods:

Setting material requirements vary depending on the installation location, substrate, and conditions. Consult your tile professional or setting-material manufacturer to select products appropriate for handmade porcelain mosaic tile and the specific application.

• Use setting materials that meet or exceed applicable TCNA installation guidelines.
• Use a qualified tile contractor experienced in installing mosaic products.
• Setting methods should conform to current TCNA guidelines and applicable local building requirements.
• For pool and continuously wet installations, follow the applicable waterproofing, bonding, and tile installation requirements for the project.

Grout Selection:

Choose grout carefully for handmade and glossy mosaic surfaces. Some sanded or abrasive grout products may scratch sensitive tile surfaces. Always confirm grout compatibility with your tile professional and grout manufacturer before installation. The suggested grout color for this product is Bostik TruColor Classic Bone H158.

Measuring:
Measure the installation area carefully and purchase at least 10% additional material to allow for cuts, breakage, installation waste, and future repairs. Because this is a handmade mosaic, additional material may also help accommodate normal variations between sheets.

Cutting:
Plan the sheet layout before installation. Where possible, trim sheets between individual mosaic pieces along the grout joints. If an individual porcelain piece must be cut, use a wet saw equipped with a diamond blade suitable for porcelain tile. Always use appropriate eye, respiratory, and other personal protective equipment when cutting tile.

Applying Setting Materials:

• Apply the recommended setting material with the appropriate notched trowel for the installation and tile size.
• Use the flat side of the trowel to achieve consistent mortar coverage and reduce excessive ridges beneath the mosaic.
• Place the mosaic sheets carefully into the fresh setting material and align the sheets to maintain consistent grout joints.
• Press the sheets firmly and evenly into the setting material to achieve proper contact without forcing mortar excessively through the joints.
• Follow the setting-material manufacturer's instructions for coverage, working time, curing, and grouting.

Cleaning:
Remove excess grout promptly with a damp sponge according to the grout manufacturer's instructions. After the grout has cured, remove any remaining haze with a clean, dry cloth or towel. For routine cleaning and tougher stains, use a pH-neutral tile and grout cleaner that is appropriate for porcelain surfaces.

Maintenance & Care:
Clean the tile and grout regularly using a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth, sponge, or soft-bristle brush. Avoid abrasive brushes, harsh chemicals, and aggressive cleaning products that could scratch or damage the glossy surface or grout. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft, clean towel.

• Color and appearance may vary from photographs due to lighting, photography, display settings, and normal product variation.
• Minor chips, pits, surface variations, and other characteristics may occur with handmade tile.
• Purchase at least 10% additional material to allow for cuts, waste, breakage, and future repairs.
• Professional installation by a qualified tile contractor is strongly recommended.
• Always follow the latest TCNA Tile Installation Handbook and applicable local building requirements.
• For pool installations, follow the requirements of the pool system, waterproofing system, setting-material manufacturer, and applicable tile installation standards.
