WATER BASED PENETRATING SEALER TESTING PROCEDURES

TEST RESULTS BASED UPON INDEPENDENT TILE INDUSTRY STANDARDS

This report details the results of a sealer test conducted by Modern Stone Technologies per the standard set by NATCO on October 10th 2012.  This test is also accompanied by supporting pictures to document the procedure.  Further information on NATCO testing standards may be found at http://www.tilecleaning.org/grout-sealant-review-procedure.htm

The four manufacturers and their products tested were; Miracle 511, Aqua Mix Sealers Choice Gold, Dupont Stone Tech Bullet Proof, and Modern Stone Technologies Clear Guard Water.

Four 3” Diameter By 1” thick grout samples were prepared using Custom Polyblend’s Snow White grout.

Each sample was submerged in a manufacturers penetrating sealer for a time frame of 10 minutes, and then removed to dry.   The samples were then allowed to cure at room temperature for a period of seven days.

After the curing period, each sample was subjected to a series of tests to mimic some of the conditions experienced in a typical residential household (specified by NATCO).

TEST

5 minutes submerges in a pH neutral solution/2 minutes submerged in boiling water. The above test was repeated five times, and then the samples we allowed to dry and sit for 24 hours.

After the 24 hour drying period, each manufacturers sealed sample was subjected to eight different common household liquids to evaluate their protective properties.  The liquids were allowed to dwell on the sealed samples for a period of one hour.

LIQUIDS

Soda, Hot Sauce, Ketchup, Wine, Oil, Worcestershire Sauce, Soy Sauce, and Coffee

RESULTS

10 minute observations:  Clear Guard Water and Bullet Proof – highest beading and resistance. Sealer’s Choice Gold – Some slight penetration. 511 – oil significantly soaking in lowest resistance overall.

30 minute observations: Clear Guard Water – highest resistance. Bullet Proof – slight penetration. Sealers Choice Gold – oil, wine and coffee showing significant penetration. 511 – Oil completely penetrated, most other stains slight to significant penetration.

Final observations (1 hour):  The independent testing procedures show that one product stands out with the highest level of resistance among the four sealers tested – Modern Stone’s Clear Guard Water at 17 points. A close second was Dupont’s Bulletproof scoring a total of 19 on the stain resistance scoring scale.  Aqua Mix’s Sealers Choice Gold came in third with 20 points and Miracle 511 a distant fourth with 29 points. See chart below.

Modern Stone sealers utilize a micro emulsion technology that significantly contributes to the overall penetration and durability of their formulations.   It is clear that Modern Stone employs some of most advanced chemistry available on the market today for the protection of grout and natural stone.
