Professional Step-by-Step Curbless Shower Installation Guide

The ClearPath Curbless Shower Pan System is designed to create modern barrier-free shower installations with proper drainage, waterproofing, and structural support for residential and commercial bathroom remodeling projects.

This installation manual provides step-by-step guidance for properly preparing, assembling, waterproofing, and tiling the ClearPath shower system.

Pre-Installation Planning

Before beginning installation, verify all materials, tools, plumbing components, and structural framing requirements are ready and compliant with local building codes and Tile Council of North America (TCNA) guidelines.

Recommended Installation Tools

  • Circular or reciprocating saw
  • Wet saw
  • Impact driver or cordless drill
  • 3/16" V-notch trowel
  • Float and screed tools
  • Hammer
  • Utility knife or heavy-duty shears
  • Hack saw

Required Installation Materials

  • Sand and mortar mix
  • Modified thinset mortar
  • PVC or ABS pipe cleaner
  • PVC or ABS cement
  • 2" x 4" blocking lumber
  • Joist hangers
  • Drain grate assembly

Subfloor Requirements

The subfloor assembly must comply with local building codes and TCNA installation standards. Proper framing and support are critical for long-term shower performance and tile durability.

Step 1: Determine Shower Layout

Plan the shower layout and drain location carefully. Maximum distance from the drain should not exceed 4 feet when using a 1-1/4" subfloor assembly to maintain proper drainage slope.

Step 2: Remove Existing Subfloor

Remove the subfloor as needed, ideally along joist centerlines. Subfloor reveal from the sill plate should not exceed 3/4".

Step 3: Install Blocking for Drain Plate

ClearPath drain blocking installation

Install 2" x 4" blocking around the drain location. The top of the blocking should sit approximately 1/4" below the joists to properly align the drain flange.

Blocking should be spaced approximately 12-3/16" on center.

Step 4: Connect Drain Plumbing

Connect 2" Schedule 40 PVC or ABS piping to the drain assembly. Clean and glue all plumbing joints using the appropriate primer and cement.

Step 5: Install the Drain Plate

Installing ClearPath drain plate

Secure the drain plate to the blocking using four 1-5/8" screws.

Step 6: Install Additional Blocking Support

Additional blocking support for TI-ProBoard

Ensure all TI-ProBoard edges are fully supported by joists or blocking.

Step 7: Install Perimeter Support Pieces

Perimeter support installation for curbless shower pan

Install perimeter support pieces to contain the mortar bed during installation. These components are not structural supports.

Step 8: Dry Fit TI-ProBoard Panels

Dry fitting TI-ProBoard panels

Install TI-ProBoard panels perpendicular to the joists while ensuring each panel spans a minimum of three joists or blocking sections.

Step 9: Fasten TI-ProBoard Panels

Fastening TI-ProBoard shower panels

Fasten panels beginning at the drain area and working outward. Install screws along the marked fastening channels at each joist location.

Step 10: Install Perimeter Backer Board

Installing perimeter shower backer board

Install ProTEC® or ProPanel® perimeter backer boards to match the finished floor height.

Step 11: Prepare Mortar Bed

Prepare a 4:1 sand-to-cement mortar mix according to ANSI A108.1B standards. Fully pack mortar into the dovetail ribs for maximum structural strength.

Step 12: Create Shower Slope

Creating sloped mortar bed for curbless shower

Screed the mortar bed to create proper slope toward the drain assembly. Keep the drain membrane clean and allow the mortar bed to cure fully before continuing.

Step 13: Clean the Surface

Remove dust, debris, and contaminants before waterproofing installation.

Step 14: Install Waterproofing Membrane

Apply thinset mortar using a 3/16" V-notch trowel and install the AQUA SHIELD waterproofing membrane with proper overlap and full adhesion.

Step 15-16: Wall Integration and Waterproofing

Install wall backer boards and waterproofing systems according to TCNA guidelines while maintaining proper membrane overlap and waterproof transitions.

Step 17: Tile Installation

Install tile using ANSI A118.4 compliant thinset mortar while following TCNA tile installation standards and manufacturer installation guidelines.
